    Honestly, anyone still listening to the Nazi propaganda show that is Joe Rogan’s podcast, they deserve this experience.

    2006-rabbit is somewhat right. It’s a lot easier to do propaganda over a handful of radio and TV stations than when anybody can host their own podcast.

    Can you imagine the hellscape the USA would be in if media was just 3 major networks? Trump has already shown how willing he is to use his power to control what’s allowed on TV.

      The propaganda is heavy controlled via a few companies. Google and Meta, primarily.

      I’d argue it’s worse, as now it’s intensely personalized, so everyone gets their own little shard of reality instead of one “averaged” version. That, and even with slants, the old networks did follow journalistic standards to some extent, while modern influencers are under no such obligation.

        Google and Meta aren’t controlling propaganda. They’re just trying to make ad dollars.

        Propaganda is something you lose money doing, because you’re spending money (or using influence) to change minds.

      yes, but do not discount how easily a huge part of the market was bought out and turned those decentralized broadcasters into free agent propagandists. rogan is the highest profile example but he’s far from the only one, and it takes a lot less to buy smaller personalities

        Rogan says a lot of dumb shit, but I don’t think he’s a “free agent propagandist”. I don’t think he’s being paid to say that dumb stuff, at least not directly. I think it’s more that he either believes it or he thinks it makes for podcasts that people will download / stream. I don’t think that a Swedish media giant paid him a huge sum in order to spread propaganda, I think they did it because he had a huge audience and they thought that by making him exclusive to Spotify they could corner the market on podcasts. Luckily they were completely wrong.

        The Russia Today / Tenet Media event did show that some right wing podcasters accepted money to knowingly or unknowingly launder Russian propaganda. But, these were much smaller podcasters than Joe Rogan. And, it shows that instead of the major 3 networks being forced to spread American propaganda, in the current media landscape there are so many smaller podcasters that not only can the US government not control the media, they can’t even prevent foreign countries from buying airtime.

        IMO the whole podcast space is a free for all. There’s paid-for propaganda, but only some of it is American. Not all the top podcasts that Americans listen to are even American.

      When the media was just 3 major networks, they had the power to say no to the government. These days their viewership is so low that they can be controlled by the government.

        They never had the power to say no to the government. The government was more restrained in telling them openly and in public what they should say. But, they mostly obeyed in advance, slanting all their stories in a way that was “patriotic” more than it was truthful.

    I want to make a podcast BUT NO! The CIA says I have to get famous first! Gotta get big arrested again, only this time for using my penis wrong in a public setting AND in my window, which is why I think Epstein is alive cuz obviously I’m a cop, too. Like, Jesus. I can just hide by talking about ballsacks for twenty minutes before revealing that MKULTRA and Star Gate are the same exact fucking thing; they were old names for our enlightenment program. I told my ROTC cadre that my nonexistent sister got me pregnant because I judged my father’s wrath more of a threat than the United States Military, that’s why I’m forced to do this. But I’m serious about making a podcast. Just gotta jump through some hoops for God, those dicks.

    At least podcasts are still kind of decentralized and we can get good content without being tied to a YouTube account.

      If you have an RSS feed setup for the podcast (not all grant this access), then generally the ads aren’t part of it. They are added in whatever program they are generally loaded into like Spotify, apple podcasts, etc. I recently setup Audiobookshelf to self host them and just popped the link for the RSS feed into the “Add” section and listen to it just like anywhere else, but without the ads.

        AntennaPod lets you set a automatic skip at the start and end for each pod and let’s you manually skip every time you want

          You can customize your forward-skipping amount of time (and hotkeys for AirPods, if you’re into that) in Overcast! I used Apple Podcasts for a while, then like a few years ago (okay it was like a decade now) they updated the UI for their app and I hated it. Switched to Overcast after checking out a few other options and it’s amazing.

          Then they updated Overcast and it all went to shit. It was the worst update to an app I’ve ever seen. Apparently to move it into a new engine or something, but then removing the ability to listen to podcasts as they download, and podcasts would randomly just stop and delete themselves. Awful.

          That was fixed pretty quickly, it’s back to being great. But I’m a little nervous about any app I like aaaaaa

          Side note: While checking out other podcast apps, I saw a few others that people really liked, mainly Pocket Casts. Check the tracking info and data collection before you download anything. Pocket Casts is invasive, “Podcast App” is invasive and looks shady as hell, Audible is more invasive, Spotify is a privacy NIGHTMARE holy shit look at all that shit it hoovers up.

          Spotify has the same option in 15 second intervals. It’s great as long as I’m not in the car or the shower when the ad break hits.

              I use the xManager version, not sure if that still has all the trackers in it. Either way, I don’t pay for premium and if the worst I have to put up with is a sponsored segment, I can tolerate that for not having to have my podcasts downloaded to my phone.

            Podcast Addict lets you customize how many seconds skipping forward or backwards are. I can use the skip track buttons in my car to do this using Android Auto.

    Listen, I love my podcasts. I love Pseudopod. I love WTYP. I love Lions Lead by Donkeys. I love Ballin’ Out Super. I love Hello From The Magic Tavern. I love my Chapo (❤️ Matt Christman, you da real MVP)

    But at no point have I made it to the end of an episode and thought “Wow, this crazy mixed-up thing called life is all going to work out.”

    This is a loser hobby for dorks and nerds who want a parasocial relationship with the C-lister at the Improv Club. It is a heady mix of adorable geeks and weirdos sharing a slice of their personal passions with you. But it is almost never an optimist-inducing experience.
