  • Romeo and Juliet is a great example of why I think it’s fucking asinine to even care.

Specifically, if the actors need to look Italian, you will need to argue that an accurate telling of that story has never been accomplished.

Was it an accurate telling when Shakespeare himself was involved in the production? When the actors were exclusively pasty English men? Or was it only accurate after Shakespeare himself was dead and a translated production was performed in Italy by Italian men and women? Do the actors need to actually be 16 and 13? Or can maybe young looking adults be used? Should we go back to the original Italian spelling of their names or is anglicisation in this case ok?

Why does your suspension of disbelief only stop when the skin color changes? What even does an Italian look like? Rome was a commercial hub for centuries that saw settlers from all over the known world. Are they not Italian?

What’s even better is there’s a great opportunity to use subtext to tell a much deeper story with Romeo and Juliet specifically by making one of the families black, because the specific beef between the Montague’s and Capulet’s isn’t really discussed.

Sure, there are times when it’s important to get those details right. Specifically, when ethnicity is a central component to the story being told. Those stories aren’t very common, and almost certainly will be the ones you think of as exceptions to everything else I just said. Otherwise, bro, it’s a movie, everything about it is a lie.

  • Kinda depends on the generator. I saw one the other day that was of a guy in a bedroom on an oil rig. It had an HP Chromebook on the desk. As in I was able to reverse image search it to find the brand of computer it was. The entire image was AI generated. There were a few details off, a few weird things about the image that didn’t make sense on closer inspection but by in large, it looked like a regular old selfie.

  • I make Span-ish rice based on a recipe a gal I used to work with gave me. Her whole family was from Mexico. It’s pretty simple, do with this what you will.

    2 cups long grain rice.
2 cups good chicken stock (I use better than bouillon).
    1 small can tomato sauce.
A lot of cumin. Like a lot.
A can of adobo sauce (optional).
    1 can of Rotel (optional).
    2 tablespoons of butter

Melt the butter in a large saute pan (nonstick is wise), toast the rice and ground cumin until the rice smells nutty. While that’s going mix together the tomato sauce, stock and any adobo sauce or blended chipotle peppers you plan on using. If you don’t like it spicy I’d still suggest using a little adobo. When the rice is toasted and in the liquid and Rotel. I generally stir it together here. As soon as it’s boiling put a tight lid on it and let it go at a good simmer for 15 minutes. Take it off the heat, remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork and let it sit for a few minutes. This is a good time to taste for seasoning and add salt if you feel like it’s needed. I find this gets better as it sits. Always better the second day.

If you plan on adding any veggies like onion, Bell pepper, or corn, I’ve found it’s best to saute them separately and add them back to the pan with the liquid. I’ve never added chicken but I would imagine if you use chicken thighs you could do the same thing.
