It would be great if all three co-ordinated with other governments, so all ban Twitter at the same time.

And yes, ban Twitter; not just Grok. The business behind it (Musk and other clowns) knows fully well what its model is doing, and should be held responsible.

Regrettably, Carney and Minister Solomon have each said that a ban of X is off the table (thanks /s, you knobs). It’d be nice to see Starmer do something good for a change

(Edit: also, I believe what Starmer is proposing is a ban of Grok on X, as opposed to a ban of X)

“Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power.” - Benito Mussolini

You guys really don’t get it yet do you?

That’s apparently an unsourced quote but in practice it distills everything else he has to say about corporatism in particular and everything being within the state and such so whatever, just be aware you won’t be able to find a speech with that phrase in it

I would argue that it also crucially ignores his goal of taking over the power of the church as well, but Mussolini was cagey on that matter by necessity so it’s not evidence against the quote.

Not surprised, but still disappointing. Had my hopes up for a second, against my better judgment. X is top of the list for tech to block and yet our government ministers and PM at still on there using it.

Chances are these dumb fucks are not gonna ban anything if they focus on having shit in the news first. Just put the actual legislation in place. Act first, blabber later.

That obviously would be preferable given the choices. Even though I hate walled gardens with a passion.
I just found the idea of moving from one “eccentric” billionaire from USA’s platform to another billionaire from USA’s platform funny. Lest we forget about how meta has handled the flow of information in the past like with the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar.

What do they mean by “ban” in this context?

    Stop having official government accounts?
Demand that all elected officials (and public servants?) delete personal accounts?
Block it from being accessed within the country?

It won’t get banned in Australia. Musk will pull Starlink and that will absolutely force the federal governments hand. The outback and most of rural Australia are on Starlink.

Yeah, you kinda need to live out there to understand why breaking from it will be difficult.

It completely changed internet access out there, in many parts. Unfortunately the investment in optic fibre NBN or mobile tower services has been nowhere near enough.

i think it’s necessary. it’s not about surpressing an opinion, but an army of fake news or conspiracy bots, propaganda, ai slop, racism, hate speech etc. the idea that you just have to educate people against this is illusory. where can you get educaged, when the internet is confronting you with 100 times the amount of information that frabicates another “reality”? it is so much easier to talk in easy headlines that you can just invent, than to explain your point, defend it with facts that you have to prove and account for the nuances.

i’m totally for free speech - however you have to take responsibility. platforms like x without proper moderation don’t do that. they fail to take responisbility.

People can still switch to Mastodon. After all, the only thing Twitter offers is the content made by users. If users switch, Twitter has no content.
