Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Why is the transfer speed so slow from my laptop to mobile phone on wired cable?English
9·21 hours agofor each file, the computer has to ask the phone about the file, wait for the phone to process the file request, and respond. Then it can start transferring the file. With a single file, it can copy everything in one go without stopping.
You’re basically being bottlenecked by your phone’s CPU, and by high latency in a single-threaded task.
once per hour 😎
Not to mention all the software will be deleted if the military shows up. These things don’t run in the cloud for security reasons.

I think ideally Greenland would have their own military as part of (European aligned) NATO when they decolonize, but that’s a few decades off probably. The Trump situation is accelerating the ongoing decolonization process though, as long as they don’t end up getting colonized through American conquest.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Wikipeter founded the website in 1993 when he wanted to know more about model trains without having to visit the library
50·12 days agoThe point isn’t that Wikipedia is wrong, the point is that your research papers should cite primary sources published by the field instead of a generic encyclopedia. Even if the pages on encyclopedia are maintained by respected authors, it’s not immediately obvious, and the information is likely surface level and not worth citing.

81·13 days agoI think Lemmy has some in-memory data structures that limit the backend to a single node, too. Also postgres is great, but Lemmy really fucked up their database performance somehow.
But yeah large python codebases turn into spaghetti really quickly.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•I'm brave enough to say it: Linux is good now, and if you want to feel like you actually own your PC, make 2026 the year of Linux on (your) desktopEnglish
21·13 days agoIt’s really ironic that DRM on Netflix restricts Linux viewers to 480p. Why would anyone bother fighting with DRM when just pirating it gives you a 4K version that actually works?

91·13 days agoUse Winboat to run windows programs that have Wine issues:
Windows isn’t a secure environment, it’s just that it’s centralized enough in Microsoft that they can require all code to be signed by Microsoft and hardcode kernel signatures in the TPM. In terms of actual security against viruses and spyware, Linux is much more secure.
If you’re okay with Microsofts AI slowing down your computer and watching everything you do, then I guess the centralization and integration with big gaming companies makes it a more capable gaming system than Linux.
Personally, I couldn’t give a fuck about Battlefield 6. Trump’s son in law can keep his crappy AAA games.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Can the Steam Deck/Machine also be used for streaming?
2·24 days agoI wonder if the work on waydroid for the steam frame will translate into being able to easily run Android apps like SmartTube from big picture mode.
Edit: Apparently there is an unofficial waydroid installer, and it adds all Android apps to the big picture mode UI. So I would just install that and use the Android TV Jellyfin app and SmartTube.

Abandon “legal” streaming, it doesn’t work because of DRM.
