science@lemmy.world•‘A bombshell’: doubt cast on discovery of microplastics throughout human bodyEnglish
23·3 days agoSo, just science being science then? Disagreements have always been a part of science, and always will be. The only important factor is how they are handled. Think a study is flawed? Repeat it, and change the flaws to see if the results differ significantly. But openly discrediting any evidence (for or against a case) without testing is as unscientific as it gets. I believe the person at the end also has a point: yeah, we don’t know if microplastics are as bad as they say, but better safe than sorry.

Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon is forcibly upgrading Prime members to Alexa Plus, and users are not happyEnglish
52·3 days agoForced upgrades (or downgrades) really are the worst. Same for opt-out services instead of opt-in. Give choice back to the customer goddammit!

Losing your house is great for reconnecting with nature I guess
First angle was already nice, but now I’m jealous that I don’t get views like that 🥲

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•Alternatives to Google Maps for navigation
6·5 days agoI know OpenStreetMap exists as an alternative, but I don’t know if it has decent driving directions. You could check it out and see if it has what you want/need.
Nice view! Hope you can stay warm out there.

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Once beset by pollution, Beijing's skies are clearer than ever thanks to EVsEnglish
17·5 days agoThere’s more than just CO2 coming from combustion engines though, like nitrogen and sulfur containing compounds, which can in turn cause secondary pollution. Cumulatively, I think those pollutants have a bigger effect on human health than the road particles. Also, these road particles still get ripped up by regular cars, even if it’s to a lesser extent. So overall I’m still convinced that EVs are a step in the right direction. We can’t know for sure until more studies are performed.

Cool Guides@lemmy.ca•A cool guide to move away from big tech and discover new and better tools!English
4·5 days agoFunny how reddit isn’t on the list (or maybe I’m blind), but I guess it doesn’t really have to be since we’re already here anyway.

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Once beset by pollution, Beijing's skies are clearer than ever thanks to EVsEnglish
221·5 days agoI’d imagine the amount of road particles ripped up is less than the amount of CO2, NOx, ozone and other pollutants and fine particles emitted by combustion engines, but I’m no expert. Only time will tell, but at least short-term the results seem positive.

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Once beset by pollution, Beijing's skies are clearer than ever thanks to EVsEnglish
44·5 days agoLike all countries, there’s some good and bad things to say, but I think that investing in renewables was a very smart move on their part.

49·5 days agoIt’s always nice to see some good news in the shitshow that is modern day life, makes me hopeful that a better future is still possible. I hope that one day Beijing (and the rest of the world) can go back to clean air 365 days a year.

Interesting study. Might need to start hitting the gym again then.
