I’d rather have aphids than have no pollinators!
Ladybug larva — and if you see a lot of these, that’s a really good sign. It means that there’s an actively reproducing ladybug population, which in turn means that the area isn’t heavily poisoned with insecticides. Let’s keep it that way!

4·4 months agoThere’s the -dooj suffix, which means “a familiar thing that should be around here somewhere, and that has such-and-so quality.” This is useful for asking questions like “Where’s the … the clickydooj?”
- clickydooj — TV remote
- stickydooj — roll of masking tape, wad of blue-tack, etc.
- pokeydooj — sharp tool, digging stick, etc.
- dogwalkydooj — leash
- scoopydooj — ice cream scoop
- pinchydoojes — tongs
(The variant spelling -doodge is also acceptable.)

I was talking about Maoist and Stalinist dictatorships, not socialism.
“Communism” was the brand name that these dictatorships used for their artificially red-dyed flavor of fascist mass murder. This name was stolen from the original Communists, and falsely & deceptively used by the fascist mass-murderers. Neither Stalin nor Mao had any intention of ever living in a classless society. Like all fascist leaders, they demanded obedience beyond that accorded to feudal kings, and erected new forms of hierarchy and class for their servants to populate — while they murdered the common people in whose name they claimed to rule.
The “dictatorship of the dictator pretending to care about the proletariat” murdered the proletariat by millions.
However, when people today say “Communism” — as in the title of this post — they are often referring to those dictatorships, and not to the earlier Communism of Marx and Engels, whose name the fascists misappropriated.
Hence my response, which distinguished Maoist and Stalinist fascist dictatorships from the theoretical communism of Marx and Engels.
Do not bother making excuses for fascist mass-murderers. There are none.
Yeah, where the dangerous job was “hunt something so you don’t starve”, the motivation for doing the dangerous job is pretty obvious.
Under Maoism or Stalinism, aka the dictatorship of the dictator pretending to act for the proletariat? You are ordered to do it, for your own good and the good of the Party. If you don’t follow orders, you just get shot; and your family is put in a prison camp, your children raped and beaten and forced to labor.
Under real stateless, classless communism? Nobody knows, because that hasn’t existed yet. Anyone claiming to know exactly how it might operate is talking out of their hat. Marx is pretty clear on that.

Linux@programming.dev•Linus Torvalds Expresses His Hatred For Case-Insensitive File-Systems
2·1 year agoI recall a case-insensitivity bug from the early days of Mac OS X.
There are three command-line utilities that are distributed as part of the Perl HTTP library:
GET,HEAD, andPOST. These are for performing the HTTP operations of those names from the command line. But there’s also a POSIX-standard utility for extracting the first few lines of a text file. It’s called
head.I think you see where I’m going with this.
HEADandheadare the same name in a case-insensitive filesystem such as the classic Mac filesystem. They are different names on a Unix-style filesystem.Installing
/usr/bin/HEADfromlibwww-perlonto a Mac with the classic filesystem overwrote/usr/bin/headand broke various things.

Technology@lemmy.world•Fighting pedophilia at the expense of our privacy: The EU rule that could break the internetEnglish
0·3 years ago- Backdoors in consumer software cannot in fact be restricted to “legitimate” use. All it takes is one “bad apple” to leak the keys – say, a radicalized police officer leaking them to a fascist group for use in harassing political opponents – and those keys show up on the darknet and are directly available to abusers. This is a much larger threat than (e.g.) traditional landline telephone wiretapping.
- If secure communication systems are made illegal, the organizations that build those systems (e.g. Signal) will shut down so as not to be prosecuted for “enabling child abuse”. This deprives their current users, including children, of the secure communication systems they are already using today.
- Sadly, law enforcement officers abuse their power quite often. They also have a higher rate of domestic abuse than the general population. Giving them power to spy on children’s communication is directly enabling abusers.

Technology@lemmy.world•Fighting pedophilia at the expense of our privacy: The EU rule that could break the internetEnglish
1·3 years agoTaking away privacy makes it easier for children to be abused.
Remember, the most likely abusers of children are not strangers off the Internet; they’re people who have authority over those children: parents, church leaders, teachers, coaches, police, etc.
Private online communication makes it easier for abused children to get help.
In other words, these laws are not “fighting pedophilia”. They are enabling child abuse.

2·3 years agoRemember, streaming only has a business model as long as it has a better user experience than piracy. That’s why iTunes took off in the era of Napster. When a streaming service’s user experience drops below that of digging up pirate treasure off a shitty ad-ridden torrent site, that service is not long for the world.
Fascists aren’t morally healthy humans. Authoritarians can’t cope with social reality, where different people can have different opinions and loyalties and yet support each other. They always seem to end up succumbing to patriarchal cults, where Lenin-Hitler-Mao-Trump gets to do whatever he wants to your sons and your daughters, and you and your working class have no recourse.

“Marxism-Leninism” is Stalinists’ preferred term for their political ideology. They endorse the genocidal tyranny of Stalin, while claiming that Stalin’s tyranny is justified by Lenin’s and Marx’s theory.
If someone calls themselves a “Marxist-Leninist”, just ask what they think of Stalin’s genocides (plural). Then stand back.
