Updated mine, but, realistically, I don’t think most of us are directly exposing our VaultWarden instances to the internet … I can’t imagine I’m all that weird by only exposing it over VPN for remote use.

Technology@lemmy.world•Parents opt kids out of school laptops, ask for pen-and-paper
25·3 months agoExecs know teachers are doing it because of internal drive to teach and not for the pay and they take advantage of it in absolutely every way they can.
If teachers want useful posters on the wall, gotta pay for it. If teachers want students to not have to share a worksheet 3:1, teachers will pay for it. It’s incredible not only how much they do for free, but how much they pay out of pocket for the “privilege”

Linux@lemmy.ml•Pros and cons on - and alternatives to - running three separate servers on one single Linux instance using systemd-nspawn
2·4 months agoSorry, not 100% sure what you mean “converting its spec”
If you mean take an existing docker and move it to a standard installation, that would depend on what all is needed. Some installations include a ton of other dockers with databases and such and you’d basically need to move them all independently and ensure the programs talk to each other properly.
For others, it’s be as simple as making sure the contents of your original docker data folder is in the right place when you launch the app and you’re done.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Pros and cons on - and alternatives to - running three separate servers on one single Linux instance using systemd-nspawn
2·4 months agoUnless you’re downloading a prebuilt LXC, you’d still have to do all the manual install yourself.
If you do download a prebuilt one, then you’ll need to do the updating yourself, like you would a normal application, including ensuring you keep dependencies up to date and all that.
Both have their pros and cons and I use each depending on what I’m doing (and basically all of my dockers are running in their own LXC containers, which I find to be the best of both worlds).
FWIW, I don’t download any prebuilt LXC anymore other than the base ‘Ubuntu’ or ‘Debian’ ones … the ones in ProxMox that have the prebuilt apps were a pain to update for me, especially since I had no idea how they were actually installed and most of the times they didn’t have package manager installations or curl installed and it was just way more trouble than it was worth.
ProxMox does now have a built in containerized docker implementation that will use an LXC and you can just provide it the docker package details, but, it’s still in beta and I don’t know that it’s ready to be depended on yet.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's an objectively terrible movie that you love anyway?
19·4 months agoI honestly have no idea how WaterWorld was not a huge hit, I loved that movie … I’m also very afraid to re-watch it since I haven’t seen it in quite a while.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's an objectively terrible movie that you love anyway?
18·4 months agoThis is mine too!
It’s absolutely INSANE, nothing like the games and somehow it still works in a weird way for me - and somehow still manages to show more love/respect to the source material than some other adaptations I’ve seen (even while being nothing like the source material)!
For anyone that hasn’t looked into the behind the scenes of this movie, you NEED to!
The crew openly wore custom made shirts shitting on the directors, the actors were drunk most of the time, Leguizamo had his leg broken on set! … Haskins was stabbed FOUR times, electrocuted, drowned AND had his finger broken [anytime you see him holding something over his hand, it’s likely because he was hiding the cast]! Mario Mario had a lot of reasons to be so grumpy!
That was the first thing I checked and was also surprised!

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I bought a handheld computer, now Google says I'm not allowed to do whatever the hell I want to it
8·5 months agoIt’s like on my old Nvidia SHIELD, an update rolled in and all of a sudden there are ads on the homepage. Some people were ok with TV/movie ads being on a TV/movie device, but, why the hell would I want ads for content only available on services that I don’t have? If they’d at least only given me ads for the services it knew I was subscribed to, I would have at least been less pissed off since it could have been useful.
Reached out to Nvidia and they say there isn’t anything they can do, it’s built that way by Google. By no means do I just blindly accept that that was accurate, but, it’s still bullshit that with a basic update all of a sudden the nature of my device was completely changed (imo) and I’m expected to just suck it up or work around it with 3rd party launchers that weren’t as polished.
Dunno if it’s gotten better/worse in the last couple years, mine died and I elected to not replace it with another Android device.
Is this you? If so, my wife wonders what camera and software you used!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your "great I am an old person now" complaint?
10·5 months agoI was the same and then I rebuilt a server that originally took me forever to get up and running with all it’s weird requirements and had it going in docker in like 30 minutes with my old settings imported in.
I still compartmentalize individual programs into their own VM/CTs though, even when using docker.
Still have no idea how to package one together myself though.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Using Fail2ban to protect exposed services
0·6 months agoYeah, I had a overall bad experience with everything being buggy and then even devices that weren’t connected to tailscale would start trying to ping the tailnet address instead of the local (wasn’t using their funky bridge subnets feature or whatever it’s called, so I don’t know why it would happen).
Their magicDNS is cool in theory but caused me nothing but problems. Once I turned off their DNS and set up my own DNS server for it though, it’s gotten to basically be as seamless as they claim it’s supposed to be from the start. I’m no longer having any issues with it at all.

RIght?! Also, when you count golfing as ‘work’, yeah, other people complaining about how difficult it is when they work all the time might seem weird.
Also - when you don’t need to worry about things like cooking, cleaning, driving, etc…, you’ve got a shit ton more time in the day that you can put towards ‘work’ if you want!
