Leopards Ate My Face@lemmy.world•Nebraska Town Finds Out Town's Biggest Employer To CloseEnglish
78·22 days agoPer the article:
Tyson, the meatpacking giant that employs about 3,200 workers in the town, will leave all of them without jobs when the facility closes on Jan. 20.
Per Wikipedia:
As of the 2020 census, the population of Lexington, Nebraska was 10,348.
So about 30% of them are without jobs. That’s a HUUUUUGE blow to their economy.

science@lemmy.world•Urban birds' beak shape rapidly changed during COVID-19 lockdowns, suggesting human-driven transformationsEnglish
1·24 days agoThey observed that birds that hatched during the pandemic, when the campuses became empty and there was less food waste to feed on, had beaks with higher bill length and slimmer structure, similar to the wildland birds. However, after the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and people started trickling back to campus and food waste became ample. Birds born during this period reflected this shift, exhibiting shorter, thicker beaks typical of urban juncos.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Someone with your last name commits a heinous crime and their name becomes infamous, would you change that name? Why or Why not?
0·2 months agoI guess it depends how common your last name is where you live. If you’re a Smith/Johnson/Brown/Williams in the USA, those are pretty common. If you’ve got one of those names in China, maybe a name change is in order.
If your last name is Summerbell, that’s a bit rare, and maybe you need to distance yourself.
