Funny@sh.itjust.works•Wanton Destruction Of CBS Property - Letterman & Colbert Toss Stuff Off The Roof Of The Ed Sullivan
1·4 days agoSome terrible star trek shows? Literally the distro benefit ratio of late night shows is great even if declining viewership is making it less profitable, the fact that shows like last week tonight and the daily show are still popular shows there is still a market for a news based version of that type of thing and they decided to cancel it because trump threw a hissy fit and Jimmy Kimmel was on a similar path.

3·6 days agoOthis isn’t just for videogames either, be it Autodesk getting rid of perpetual licenses and phasing out activations for older licenses, tesla turning the self driving feature from a one time purchase to a subscription, and more and more companies rent seek without actually innovation making their product better, leaving consumers stuck in a situation where they need to try and find competent competitors or the open source community for similar-ish products.

1·6 days agoThe US military using bodies donated for scientific experiments has a long history of those bodies being blown up, this time around the bodies being used to train medics seems less of an insult to the donors than blowing them up and will help save lives, regardless of what you think of the state of Israel, so unless I missed something in the article this doesn’t seem like a bad thing.

Angela Collier had a video about this topic a few years ago that was great, I can’t remember which video it was but it might have been her first generation Grad student video.

News@lemmy.world•The Streaming Audience Is Getting Narrower, Not Bigger — TVREV
3·20 days agoIn that link it talked about how 70%+ of millenials and 60 some odd % of Gen Z were pirating last year for at least some of their entertainment, with classic downloading, intercepting streaming from the streaming services for access directly (being the most popular for you get people) and some other forms of piracy.

News@lemmy.world•The Streaming Audience Is Getting Narrower, Not Bigger — TVREV
161·20 days agoThere is the biggest elephant in the room of enshitification and the rise of piracy again. Why pay for Netflix when Plex or even better jellyfin are available for free/a one time fee for hosting Plex? Why deal with ads and lower quality video when buying/building a NAS costs about the price of a years worth of the top tier steaming platforms and you can control what’s on there not be up to the whims of what the streaming service might have available from other production companies that haven’t set up their own streaming service yet? The fact that neither enshitification nor piracy was mentioned is telling.
Not so sure that will happen, Republicans want Newsom to be the Democratic party candidate but since he’s been obviously going for the position since before Covid it has allowed for a lot of his shady shit to make it out and I think that will hurt him bad in the primary.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that the idea that drivers pay for roads is a myth, because funding sources also include property taxes, sales taxes and income taxes that people pay regardless of whether they drive or not
91·20 days agoOn the one hand most people in America have to drive, so they do to a certain extent, on the other hand people who own property work or purchase things such as food benefit from the road system even if they don’t drive as grocery stores in their communities get deliveries on roads and the such. Not a fan that our society requires cars for almost everything but knowing how tax dollars are collected and spend are only part of the story, it’s like saying that because you personally don’t want social security or single payer healthcare or public schools you wouldn’t benefit from its implementation; social security means that older people don’t become complete burdens on society dying in the street and the such, single payer healthcare would reduce costs for all medication and increase the number of doctors available to treat people because (one would hope) there would be less paperwork a doctor needed to do between patients at the very least, and public schools having an educated population eans cheaper services that require things like reading comprehension, be it entertainment, engineered goods, medical treatments, etc. You might not use any one or all of those yourself doesn’t mean you don’t benefit from them.
Already starting with the dad jokes before their child was born?
On the one hand I agree with you that following raise air isn’t helpful but there are at least 2 other people I can think of that I ignore who post online a lot and cause a lot of damage who you can’t ignore, Trump and Musk, they have their followings that make all interactions more toxic and don’t want to be ignored and will make rash decisions to not be. I’m not sure ignoring is the right decision because one of them bought power and the other conned their way into power, J.K. Rowling has some power and has thrown her weight in regards to that just not as much as others outside her focused political efforts which do suck. Does fascism grow in ignorance from those who don’t follow their dogma or does it starve for more attention and wither until it gets that attention?
The most tragic and obvious version of AI already doing that is the school that was bombed in Iran due to AI messing up at best.

Technology@lemmy.world•Claude-powered AI coding agent deletes entire company database in 9 seconds — backups zapped, after Cursor tool powered by Anthropic's Claude goes rogueEnglish
2·22 days agoNah but that’s what he wanted, he is the truest form of tech bro, destroy the world, refuse to accept consequences of his actions, weaseled his way out of the situation and managed to, in the wake of unimaginable human suffering, get more power over people and has a god complex tell me this isn’t some or all the characteristics of people like Peter Theil, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai, Bill Gates, hell even Tim Cook and Steve Jobs before him. Punishment doesn’t stop this sort of behavior but removing the possibility of someone having that level of control over others is the only way but the richest and most powerful have always sought ways of amassing more power not realizing that that leads to worse off situations for everyone including themselves, Horizon did great encapsulating that trait in Faro, but be it him, the people behind Skynet, the Matrix or whatever other tech dystopia that tech bros seem pathologically unable to not try to make happen in the worst way possible is only the beginning, they seem to forget that even with advanced tech that serves their needs and wants, which won’t help their mental health, the people lower down on the rungs of society have brains, wants and needs, and they have more expertise in all sorts of things than the 1% are except for mass exploitation. This inevitably goes wrong one of a few ways, either everyone dies from the tech, or so many that societal collapse is inevitable not great and even if society survives it can’t functionally reconstitute itself; 2 they win and kill off or supress enough of society that the society becomes less productive and instead of fighting the powerful they flee or don’t participate in wealth generating for the rich were they don’t have to, maybe to rise up again later or the economy of the region just ignores them completely and the government protects themselves from their people more than anything else, or 3rd your revolution with terror campaigns against any and all who can be credibly accused of being part of the former tyrants. In all 3 cases the richer people end up poorer overall because wealth flees or dies in autocracy.

That assumes that there are only those two options, you have the paperclip problem as an option, the best case scenario is that the super human AI model just ignores us or wants to cooperate with us the way we try to cooperate with species like wolves to manage ecosystems.
