8·5 days agoAmusing Ourselves to Death (1985) by Neil Postman, The Shallows (2010) by Nicholas Carr.
I think about both a lot, both are terrifyingly prescient and the issues they describe only got worse.
Amusing Ourselves is basically how the television age shapes politics (and all the ideas extend perfectly/terrifyingly into the modern internet era) while the Shallows is about how the internet is literally rewiring our minds.
Both are quite short, easy reads that will stick with you.
And on a lighter palate cleanser sort of note, anything Mary Roach writes is worth reading.

Talk is cheap, more so online.
I really like my friends though. Don’t you folks? Last 3 lines, 4th last if my pals know, sure. Do others really not have people whom we love?

And I’ll point out that Workers & Resources is on a historical sale. For those of us boycotting American goods, it is an American company but you can at least buy it on GOG which, as I understand it, is Polish. (Unsure with the recent sale but he’s Polish so…)

8·9 days agoAhaha, right? We buy these beater bikes so we won’t be sad when they get borrowed permamently but then they do so well for us that we gotta protect 'em.
I’ve wondered about the tracker thing but I figure one of the local open air chop shops would take that out pretty quick. (Best hope is the bike is so shitty they wouldn’t think anyone would bother with one…)

2·9 days agoThat’s wild to me. I guess if there’s no one biking, there’s no resale market so no incentive to steal them. In my city, plenty of cyclists so wild theft problem. My bike is an absolute beater of cobbled together ridiculousness. I love her but she looks like trash.
Love the repurposing stuff! My coffee table is one my partner at the time found in our alley and I love it.

2·9 days agoMy kryptonite stood up to some would be thieves! They then kicked the shit out of the bike, stole the bracket that holds the headlight as well as the kryptonite lock holder. It was almost impressively petty and made me laugh until I paid more to fix her than it cost to buy her.

2·9 days agoThat’s wild. Do you live in a city or more a town?
In my city, the bike thefts are wild. So far I’ve had two stolen and my my current bike kicked to absolute shit when they couldn’t break the lock.

I feel these memes are like us looking at rich peoples’ instagrams, yes at some point in time some folks lived like this but many more did not and in fact lived much more miserably then now.
