Technology@lemmy.world•FreeBSD Just Removed The Last Of Its GPL-Licensed CodeEnglish
86·14 days agoIn my opinion, I just don’t understand permissive licenses. For example, with FreeBSD’s license, companies can essentially “steal” the hard-earned efforts and use them to enrich themselves. For example, FreeBSD could have been a gaming OS, as the PlayStation’s OS is FreeBSD. However, they didn’t give anything back to the community.
Copyleft licenses, on the other hand, require companies to contribute any changes they make to the code back to the community so that it benefits the community as a whole. In this case, there’s no “stealing”, companies need to respect the community’s efforts by giving back.
That’s my two cents anyway.

Technology@lemmy.world•Big Companies Are Starting to Hire Again, Defying Predictions of AI WipeoutEnglish
31·15 days agoIn my opinion, AI is here to stay. But OpenAI and Anthropic will suffer because companies realized that don’t need a Ferarri all the time, they can do with a Honda (Chinese open-source models) 90% of the time.

105·16 days agoDon’t downvote him; he’s right. The next administration should fund Voice of America (VOA) and PBS to provide free information. The NYT is a for-profit organization.
Long before the internet, we had to buy newspapers. I don’t like it, but that’s the reality of business.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI bet goes awry: Oracle fires 21,000 employeesEnglish
643·16 days agoChinese open-source models are becoming the norm. You don’t need the latest model from ChatGPT (e.g., a Ferrari) to complete your task. A simple Honda will suffice (open-source models), and it uses a lot less energy since it runs on your home or company’s infrastructure.
Because of that, I predict that we’re going to see a lot of financial hardship among AI companies.
