Recovering academic now in public safety. You’ll find me kibitzing on brains (my academic expertise) to critical infrastructure and resilience (current worklife). Also hockey, games, music just because.

  • I ran my last marathon on keto and it was fantastic. Five stars, would recommend to anyone. There was just no slowing down and I didn’t even notice the wall around the 20 mile mark. Where glycogen is finally burned out.

I didn’t find it sustainable as a lifestyle though because I eat in other peoples homes a lot. And it’s just rude to not eat what they put in front of you. Eating out was just strange as well since I would just eat the protein and leave the sides. Or ask to substitute whatever it was with salad.

  • Yes. But you’re holding it upside down. Normally the right one pulls the tape through the head. The logic goes that it reduces the number of components in the build, and if there is a problem you don’t want the trailing spool continuing to push tape into the mechanism.

In an auto reverse deck the active one will stop and the idle one will start. That pulls the tape through in the opposite direction to read the second track. In a normal deck you’d flip the tape around because it only pulls in one direction.

Edited: I looked at the pic and saw that your tape goes in upside down.

  • I think he does here, which is interesting. It is a little unclear because he keeps coming back to AI (and the interviewer is a douche) but he does seem to articulate that intelligence means consciousness which means something non-algorithmic.

I’m not even sure I have my copy of New Mind anymore but I want to go back and check my understanding of what he was arguing back in 2004 or whenever it was.

Eta: I feel like a doofus on a number of fronts. It was 1989, and right there in the wikipedia summary…

Penrose argues that human consciousness is non-algorithmic, and thus is not capable of being modeled by a conventional Turing machine, which includes a digital computer. Penrose hypothesizes that quantum mechanics plays an essential role in the understanding of human consciousness. The collapse of the quantum wavefunction is seen as playing an important role in brain function

So here is where I admit that Penrose is with it and I am going senile.
